ROSHARON -- The annual Jump for The Rose skydiving event and fundraiser is scheduled for August 9-10 beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with night jumps scheduled as well. Observers are welcomed at Skydive Spaceland, 16111 Farm to Market 521, Rosharon, as skydivers seek to not only help provide more mammgrams for patients at The Rose but also have their eyes set on a world record.

The Annual Pinkfest Mini Boogie and JFTR Main Event features two days of skydiving, BBQ, gumbo, raffle and silent auctions, all in support of The Rose. JFTR Founder Marian Sparks had her breast cancer diagnosed at The Rose and was navigated to treatment at a time when she was without health insurance. Now she gives back to other women in need with the annual event (in its fourth year) which has raised more than $50,000 to date.

Guests include:

  • Gulcin Gilbert, creator of the Pink Skies documentary with her stunning depiction of the Jump for the Cause’s trek to a Women’s World Record Skydive and the battle to educate and prevent breast cancer.
  • Freefly/Freestyle Organizers: Merriah Eakins, Multiple-time U.S. National Freestyle Champion
  • Wingsuit Organizers Gilaad Elstein, Mike Swearingen
  • Videographer Norman Kent will have cameras rolling all weekend

Alexandra Neale is organizing the effort to break a world’s record in the Head Up formation, “To explain what 'head up means', we refer to different disciplines in skydiving relating to the axis on which we fly. 'Belly jumping' refers to jumping in a 'belly-to-earth' position. 'Freeflying' has evolved to mean flying on any other axis, so feet-to-earth (head up), head-to-earth (head down) etc. A record is set in this category, by having the most number of people linked in a formation at once with 'grips' (essentially, holding hands!). It’s a lot more difficult than it looks believe me!”

The attempt will include 8 women – another first since it is solely women. 12 skydivers are ready to go

Neale noted, “Skydiving is a heavily male dominated sport and it would be fantastic to show the world what we're made of. We are honored to have been invited by Marian to be a part of the Jump for the Rose event at Skydive Spaceland and hope that in some way perhaps our attempt might bring some more coverage or help in someway to support the incredible, life changing work that The Rose does.”

The names of the women taking part are as follows: Alexandra Neale, Nicole Black, Merriah Eakins, Tammie Frank, Jessica Lynn, Natanie Cogburn, Alisha Bloodworth, Melissa Payne, Merry Regan, Cara Considine, Charity Dover Kelly, Pauline Forister
